A flock of sheep, a spring, a shepherdess, a Marian apparition, a chapel to be built... We are in Garaison in the 16th century. Three centuries later, Lourdes will experience the same wonder.
Discovering the history of the sanctuary of Notre Dame de Garaison
Located 60 km from Lourdes, in the middle of the fields, in Monléon-Magnoac near Lannemezan, the Notre-Dame de Garaison Sanctuary was, before the French Revolution, a high place of pilgrimage.
It all started in 1515, when the Virgin Mary appeared three times to Anglese de Sagazan, a young shepherdess. 25 years later, in 1540, a chapel was built at the precise location of the apparitions as requested by the Virgin. So many sick people flocked in and received so many graces that the Virgin was given the name ""Our Lady of Garaison"", ""Garaison"" meaning ""Healing"" in the local language.
His story will be told to you by Père Garçon rector of the site. He will accompany you on an exciting and erudite guided tour.
Gourmet stop at the Védère biscuit factory.
On the way back, we suggest a small gourmet detour by stopping at the Védère biscuit factory, between Bagnères-de-Bigorre and Montgaillard. You can enjoy succulent madeleines, pies and biscuits, in an original tea room set up inside a period wagon.
